Erdemir to supply steel for Turkish Navy aircraft carrier project

Erdemir, a subsidiary of Oyak, will supply around 40,000 tons of steel for the construction of the Turkish Navy’s first aircraft carrier, MUGEM, according to Oyak.

MUGEM is Turkey’s first indigenous aircraft carrier project and is designed to enhance the navy’s long-range operational capabilities.

The steel will be delivered to Sedef Shipyard and Sefine Shipyard, which are building the vessel. Oyak said the first batch of steel plates was delivered in January 2026, following the start of construction in early 2025.

Separately, Oyak said another subsidiary, Miilux OY, is prepared to supply submarine-grade steel, supporting the development of a domestic supply chain for Turkey’s naval shipbuilding and submarine programmes.

Erdemir, is Turkey’s first and largest integrated flat steel producer and is a key subsidiary of the Oyak. Miilux, founded in Finland and acquired by Oyak in 2019, specializes in heat-treated, high-strength steel products and operates a major production hub in Manisa, Turkey, including armour steel manufacturing.

Oyak is one of Turkey’s largest industrial groups, with interests across steel, mining and manufacturing.
