Huttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann (HKM) has selected Primetals Technologies to supply new Mold Expert Fiber systems for installation at its Duisburg plant, aiming to further enhance slab quality and process control in continuous casting.
The fiber-optic-based system provides advanced mold visualization, enabling real-time monitoring of critical areas where slab surface quality is formed. It allows early detection of events such as stickers, cold spots and longitudinal cracks, while improving control during mold filling and reducing meniscus asymmetry. Unlike conventional thermocouple-based systems, Mold Expert Fiber supports thousands of measurement points per mold, delivering detailed insight into meniscus shape, steel flow and mold powder behavior.
HKM said the system will provide previously unavailable process data and early warnings of potential breakouts, supporting stable operations and the development of new steel grades.
HKM specializes in slab and bloom casting and produces around 4 mln tons of liquid steel annually at its integrated Duisburg site. The company employs about 3,000 people and is jointly owned by Salzgitter, Thyssenkrupp and Vallourec
