HR steel exports jump 56pct MoM in May 2023

Turkish exports of HR steel (coils/sheets/plates) witnessed a significant growth of 56pct in May 2023 compared to April 2023, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK).

During May, Turkish suppliers exported a total of 128,954 tons of HR steel, comprising 86,821 tons in coils and 42,133 tons in sheets/plates.

Italy emerged as the major destination for Turkish HR steel, importing 31,592 tons, all in coils.

Egypt imported 22,786 tons of Turkish HR steel, primarily in the form of coils (22,602 tons). Denmark and Ukraine imported Turkish HR steel in the form of plates, amounting to 14,010 tons and 13,508 tons, respectively.

Other notable destinations for Turkish HR steel exports included Algeria (8,176 tons), Iraq (8,118 tons), Slovenia (5,352 tons), North Macedonia (5,345 tons), and Israel (5,227 tons).

From January to May 2023, the cumulative volume of HR steel exports reached 482,651 tons, with 339,746 tons in coils and 142,905 tons in sheets/plates. Italy remained the leading destination for Turkish HR steel during the first five months of 2023, receiving 106,114 tons, predominantly in coils. Egypt followed with 69,629 tons (65,617 tons in coils and 4,012 tons in sheets/plates), and Ukraine ranked third with 45,777 tons, primarily in sheets/plates.

Other prominent destinations for Turkish HR steel exports during the aforementioned period included Iraq (24,591 tons), Greece (24,241 tons), Denmark (23,698 tons), North Macedonia (20,076 tons), and Spain (19,014 tons).
