Hyundai Steel to upgrade Pohang plant with advanced quenching system

Hyundai Steel has awarded a contract to Pomini Long Rolling Mills to supply a new Pomini Quenching System (PQS), replacing the existing Tempcore system at its Pohang plant in South Korea.

The PQS system will enhance production efficiency and allow Hyundai Steel to better meet market demand for high-performance rebars by precisely controlling microstructures such as martensite, bainite, and pearlite. This enables the achievement of key mechanical properties, tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation, without relying on costly alloying elements like vanadium.

Designed to process rebars ranging from 16 to 51 mm in diameter (with 16-22 mm in 2-slit rolling), the upgraded mill has an annual capacity of 800,000 tons. It also rolls rebars up to 57 mm and plain round bars from 20 to 85 mm.

The contract includes PQS piping, a boosting pump system, main and auxiliary drives, motors, Level 1 automation, and interface with existing Level 2 systems. Pomini will also provide engineering services, along with advisory support for erection, commissioning, and training. Start-up is scheduled for late 2025.

Founded in 1953 and headquartered in Incheon, Hyundai Steel is South Korea’s oldest steelmaker and part of Hyundai Motor Group. With production sites across South Korea and abroad, the company produces around 12 mln tons annually, offering a wide range of products including H-beams, rails, rebar, hot-rolled and cold-rolled coil, and stainless cold-rolled sheet.
