JFE picks Danieli for major EAF upgrade at Mizushima facility

JFE Bars & Shapes Corporation (JFE BS), part of the JFE Group, has chosen Danieli to replace its existing DC electric arc furnace with a new 120-ton Digimelter equipped with the Q-One power-feeding system at Mizushima Works within the JFE Kurashiki facility in West Japan Works.

The project expands the long-standing partnership between Danieli and the JFE Group, following recent modernization work at JFE BS Himeji Works, where Q-One technology has been operating since October 2025, and the installation of a new 320-ton Digimeltshop at JFE Steel Kurashiki, located in the same industrial zone as the Mizushima plant.

Designed as a brownfield upgrade, the project will utilize existing infrastructure, including the electrical cabin and most of the current working platforms, reducing environmental impact and accelerating implementation. Modular Q-One equipment, containerized hydraulic units, and a customized FTP primary line will help streamline installation and lower capital costs.

The Q-One system will allow precise control of current, voltage, and frequency, improving melting efficiency while reducing energy and electrode consumption and minimizing grid disturbances. Enhanced automation will provide real-time monitoring of liquid-steel levels and reduce the need for operator intervention in hazardous areas.

JFE BS said the investment supports both operational efficiency and the JFE Group’s wider decarbonization strategy. The upgraded furnace, scheduled to begin operations in early 2028, will produce high-quality billets from recycled steel scrap for use in construction and infrastructure applications.
