Jindal Stainless partners with CJ Darcl for sustainable container solutions

Jindal Stainless, India’s largest stainless steel manufacturer, has teamed up with CJ Darcl Logistics Limited to develop lightweight and sustainable stainless steel containers. These containers are made from high-strength JT grade stainless steel (N7 as per BIS 6991 specifications) and are designed to transport various goods, including polymers, batteries, and rubber.

Each container uses 2.2 tons of JT stainless steel, replacing traditional carbon steel in the sidewalls, end walls, and roof. The underframes are crafted from customized stainless steel tubes. This transition has reduced the weight of each container by approximately 500 kilograms, leading to increased cargo capacity, improved fuel efficiency, and lower operational costs. The superior impact and fire resistance of JT grade stainless steel also enhances safety and extends the containers’ lifespan.

CJ Darcl, with its multimodal logistics network covering road, rail, air, and sea transportation, is well-positioned to deploy these containers across various operations, providing clients with increased cargo capacity and long-term cost savings. The company’s commitment to green logistics optimizes routes, reduces transit times, and lowers emissions.

Jindal Stainless not only supplied the materials but also provided comprehensive technical support throughout the project, including design collaboration, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and training for the fabrication team at Kamal Coach Works, Jaipur. Ombre Stainless Pvt. Ltd. contributed customized stainless steel tubes, enhancing strength and sustainability.

As of September 30, 2024, all 50 containers have been fabricated. Jindal Stainless previously collaborated with JBM Auto, producing over 500 energy-efficient electric buses using lightweight stainless steel, boosting performance and durability.

Looking ahead, Jindal Stainless aims to increase its facilities to achieve 4.2 mln tons of annual melt capacity by 2026. The company operates 16 manufacturing and processing facilities in India and abroad, including Spain and Indonesia, with a global network in 12 countries. Its product range includes stainless steel slabs, coils, plates, sheets, wire rods, and more.
