JSIS promotes steel slag as sustainable alternative for road construction

Jindal Shadeed Iron and Steel (JSIS) hosted an exclusive event at its Liwa facility in North Al Batinah to promote steel slag as a sustainable solution for commercial construction.

Aligned with Oman Vision 2040’s focus on sustainability and resource efficiency, the event highlighted steel slag, a by-product of steel production, as an eco-friendly alternative for road construction and infrastructure projects. By advocating its use, JSIS aims to reduce reliance on natural stone aggregates, protect Oman’s natural reserves, and advance the nation’s circular economy. Steel slag roads have been successfully implemented in countries like the USA, Germany, and Japan, proving their environmental and economic benefits while minimizing ecological damage in mining areas.

Steel slag offers several advantages over natural aggregates in road construction, including a 35pct reduction in water consumption per kilometer, 396 kiloliter with slag compared to 605 kiloliter with natural aggregates. It also helps lower carbon emissions while providing superior compressive strength of 21 N/mm2.

Harssha Shetty, CEO of JSIS, emphasized the importance of sustainable practices, stating: “With growing global environmental concerns, industries must adopt responsible resource management. The construction sector, in particular, should prioritize eco-friendly solutions to reduce its environmental impact.”

Prakash Chaudhari, COO of JSIS, added that steel slag is a reliable and environmentally sound alternative to natural aggregates, ensuring a steady supply of high-quality materials for infrastructure projects. Globally, its use has been instrumental in preserving ecosystems and reducing the environmental footprint of construction.

JSIS currently operates with an annual steel production capacity of 2.4 mln tons. The mill comprises a 1.8 mln tons per annum gas-based DRI Plant producing HBI and hot DRI. The 2.4 mln tons per annum melt shop is primarily equipped with a 200-ton electric arc furnace, a 200-ton ladle furnace, a 200-ton vacuum degassing furnace, and continuous casting machines. Additionally, the company operates a 1.4 mln tons per annum rebar rolling mill.
