Kalyani Ispat Ltd., a subsidiary of Rungta Sons Ltd., has placed an order with SMS group to supply a high-speed bar and wire rod mill for its Rajnandgaon plant in Chhattisgarh, India. The mill is scheduled for commissioning in Q3 2026 and will expand the company’s capacity for construction steel production.
The new mill will have an annual capacity of 500,000 tons, enabling Kalyani Ispat to meet rising demand for construction steel, particularly rebar, across Asia’s fast-growing infrastructure and building sectors. It will produce rebar in diameters of 8-40 mm and wire rods ranging from 5.5-20 mm.
Designed with a strong focus on sustainability, the mill eliminates conventional reheating furnaces by directly processing 130 mm square, 12 m-long billets from existing casters using induction heating technology. This approach significantly reduces energy consumption and carbon emissions while improving overall efficiency.
SMS group’s scope of supply includes a ten-pass finishing block, a new crop and dividing shear, and a high-speed delivery (HSD) system, capable of achieving rebar production speeds of up to 45 m/s. Newly designed water boxes will enable efficient bar quenching, improving mechanical properties while reducing reliance on costly alloying elements.
The wire rod line will operate at speeds of up to 100 m/s and will be equipped with pinch rolls, a laying head, a loop cooling conveyor (LCC) system, and an automated coil handling system to ensure consistent product quality and reliable operation.
The mill will also feature advanced drive, automation, and digital solutions from SMS group, allowing fully automated operation from billet entry through to bar and coil finishing, supported by real-time diagnostics and process optimization tools.
