Kardemir to modernize meltshop automation at Karabuk plant

Turkey’s Kardemir has awarded Primetals Technologies a contract to upgrade the automation systems at its meltshop in Karabuk.

The project covers modernization of three basic oxygen furnaces (BOFs), four ladle furnaces (LFs) and one vacuum degasser (VD), with each BOF designed for 120-ton heats.

As part of the upgrade, a Level 2 process optimization system will be introduced to integrate all meltshop units into a unified digital platform. The system will consolidate metallurgical, operational and planning data, improving process consistency, transparency and overall control.

Kardemir said the modernization is expected to enhance steelmaking performance by reducing reblows, lowering energy consumption, improving yield and increasing productivity.

Founded in 1937, Kardemir operates from Karabuk with an annual production capacity of 3.5 mln tons, producing blooms, billets, rebars, profiles, and other steel products.
