Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is setting up South India’s largest registered vehicle scrapping facility (RVSF) at Edappal, in partnership with South India Metal Corporation (SIMCO).
The foundation stone for the project, located at Kandanakam near Edappal in Malappuram district, was laid on February 20, 2026, by Kerala Transport Minister K. B. Ganesh Kumar, who described the initiative as a key step in strengthening the state’s vehicle recycling ecosystem.
The facility will serve the districts of Palakkad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Ernakulam and Idukki. Similar scrapping centres are planned for northern and southern Kerala in collaboration with Steel Industries Kerala Ltd (SILK).
Developed on three acres adjacent to the KSRTC regional workshop, the centre will have the capacity to process up to 100 tons of vehicles per day. Construction is expected to be completed within eight months.
Vehicle owners scrapping old vehicles at the facility will receive a Certificate of Deposit (CoD), entitling them to 10-15pct tax concessions and up to a 5pct discount on the purchase of a new vehicle. KSRTC said the project aims to ensure transparent scrap pricing while eliminating unsafe and unregulated scrapping practices.
