SMS group’s South Africa-based Metix brand and Magmec have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a magnesium metal production plant in the UAE, using advanced reduction furnace technology.
The proposed facility will process magnesium oxide from multiple feed sources, including dolomite and brine, supporting Magmec’s objective of establishing a sustainable regional supply of magnesium for industrial users.
Magnesium metal is widely used in lightweight, high-strength alloys for automotive, aerospace, and consumer electronics applications due to its low density. It is also a key desulfurizing agent in steelmaking and is used across chemical and refractory industries.
Under the MoU, Metix will support the project’s development from concept through front-end engineering design (FEED), helping to de-risk the project ahead of potential execution. The collaboration combines Magmec’s proprietary magnesium extraction technology with SMS group’s engineering expertise in metallurgical plant design and furnace systems.
The project aligns with the UAE’s Operation 300bn and “Make it in the Emirates” initiatives, supporting local manufacturing growth and downstream industries such as aluminum alloys, automotive, aerospace, and electronics.
Magmec focuses on developing clean magnesium production facilities to ensure secure and consistent supply, while Metix provides engineering, process optimization, and project delivery expertise across pyrometallurgical and DC arc furnace technologies for the global metals industry.
