Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources has introduced a national licensing framework for the waste recycling industry as part of efforts to attract up to USD 10.7 bln in private investment.
The program targets the recovery of 4.2 mln tons of recyclable materials by 2035 and is being implemented in coordination with the National Centre for Waste Management (MWAN) and other relevant authorities.
For the steel sector, the framework establishes licensed activities covering the sorting, processing and preparation of metal scrap and waste for use as industrial feedstock, improving supply chain transparency and domestic scrap availability.
The ministry said more than 235 companies, including recycling firms, scrap sorting companies and waste treatment operators, are expected to benefit from the new regulatory structure.
