RRM starts up new cold-mill complex with Danieli technology

Roofings Rolling Mills Ltd (RRM) has successfully started up its new cold-mill complex in Uganda, achieving stable operations and consistent product quality as the company expands into flat steel products.

In 2022, Roofings selected Danieli as the single-source technology partner to design and supply the integrated cold-mill complex. The project comprises a Cold Reversing Mill (CRM), a Hot-Dip Galvanizing Line (HDGL), a Color Coating Line (CCL), and a Coil-to-Coil Trimming (CTC) line.

Danieli supplied the complete mechanical, electrical, and automation scope, applying proprietary process know-how developed through continuous R&D and operational feedback. With completion of the CTC line in March 2025, hot commissioning of both the galvanizing and color coating lines was finalized. The first galvanized coil was produced in October 2025, followed by the first color-coated coil on 28 November 2025.

The single-stand, four-high CRM has a nominal capacity of around 150,000 tons per year and supplies strip to the galvanizing line. Equipped with high-response hydraulic automatic gauge control (HAGC) and a closed-loop roll coolant system, the mill can stably roll ultra-thin strip down to 0.15 mm. Integrated Danieli Automation Level 2 systems enabled rapid ramp-up, with the mill reaching its contractual rolling speed of 1,100 m/min within the first three weeks of commissioning.

The galvanizing line is designed to process strip thicknesses from 0.15 to 0.8 mm and widths of 600-1,250 mm, producing commercial and full-hard grades at speeds of up to 160 m/min. The line features a Danieli Centro Combustion horizontal annealing furnace, incorporating recuperative heating, direct-fired cleaning, low-inertia radiant tubes, and a high-efficiency jet cooler. Coating control down to 40 g/m2 per side is ensured by the Danieli Kohler X-Jet wiping system, while the finishing section handles coils as small as 5 tons for service-center applications.

The color coating line is designed for construction-grade sheets and coils, processing strip thicknesses of 0.2-0.8 mm and widths of 600-1,250 mm. Incoming coils of up to 15 tons can be processed, with finished coils produced down to 5 tons. The high-capacity line features horizontal catenary-type ovens and the DAN-COATER system with single-slide design, delivering uniform chemical treatment and paint application. The line achieved prime-quality output from the start of production, underscoring its process stability and technological robustness.
