SAIL advances Bhilai Plate Mill modernization with new furnace

India’s state-owned steelmaker, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has issued a letter of intent to Atmastco Limited for the installation of a 140-tph walking beam reheating furnace at the plate mill of Bhilai Steel Plant.

The project, valued at INR 235 crore (USD 25.85 mln), is aimed at improving operational efficiency, productivity and energy performance at the plate mill, supporting SAIL’s ongoing modernization and capacity enhancement programme.

Following execution of the formal contract, Atmastco will undertake detailed engineering, procurement, supply, erection, testing and commissioning in line with agreed technical specifications and timelines.

Atmastco is an engineering and project execution company specializing in industrial structures, heavy fabrication, furnace installation and turnkey solutions, with a growing presence across the steel, power and infrastructure sectors.

SAIL’s Bhilai Plate Mill, commissioned in 1983, is one of India’s most advanced facilities for producing heavy and medium steel plates. The 3,600-mm-wide mill operates on continuously cast slabs and is equipped with online ultrasonic testing and hydraulic automatic gauge control (HAGC), enabling high precision and consistent product quality. The mill has a production capacity of 0.95 mln tons per annum and caters to a wide range of critical applications, including defence, boilers and weather-resistant structures.

SAIL currently produces around 20.6 mln tons of crude steel annually and is targeting an expansion to 35 mln tons per year by FY2031. The company operates five integrated steel plants and three special steel plants across India, producing a wide range of flat, long, special, and railway steel products.
