The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), India’s largest government-owned steel producer, has partnered with leading global resources company BHP to advance steelmaking decarbonization through a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This collaboration marks a significant step in promoting low-carbon steelmaking technologies for the blast furnace route in India.
Under the MoU, the two parties are exploring multiple workstreams aimed at decarbonizing SAIL’s integrated steel plants, which currently utilize blast furnaces. The initial study will assess various strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).
These workstreams will evaluate the potential of alternative reductants, such as hydrogen and biochar, and aim to develop local research and development capabilities to facilitate the decarbonization transition, SAIL said.
SAIL, under the Ministry of Steel, is among the country’s top five steel producing companies with a total installed capacity of about 21 mln tons per annum.
