SMS group, together with consortium partner MCK Kutty Engineers Pvt. Ltd., has secured a contract from Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) to supply two coke dry quenching (CDQ) units for its IISCO Steel Plant in Burnpur, West Bengal.
Each unit will have a capacity of 130 tons per hour and will serve new stamp charge coke oven batteries as part of the plant’s expansion to 4.8 mln tons per year of crude steel capacity.
The project will be executed on a turnkey basis, covering design, engineering, equipment supply, installation, commissioning, automation and digitalization.
The CDQ units will improve coke quality and ensure stable, moisture-free output for blast furnace operations, while also enhancing energy efficiency through heat recovery and reducing emissions compared with conventional wet quenching.
SAIL currently produces about 20.6 mln tons of crude steel annually and plans to expand its capacity to 35 mln tons per year by FY2031. Following completion of the project, expected by 2029, capacity at the IISCO Steel Plant will increase to 7.1 mln tons per year. The Burnpur facility currently produces rebar, wire rod, angles and channels, and the expansion will enable the plant to move further into higher-grade flat steel production.
