SAIL awards key contracts for IISCO Steel Plant expansion

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), India’s largest public-sector steelmaker, has awarded Danieli contracts to supply major technologies for the expansion of the IISCO Steel Plant in Burnpur, West Bengal.

The project includes a new 5,557-m3 blast furnace, three slab continuous casting machines, and a state-of-the-art hot strip mill focused on coil production for the automotive and durable goods sectors.

The slab casters will produce slabs up to 250 mm thick and 2,100 mm wide, feeding the new hot strip mill, one of the largest in India, capable of producing premium coils from 1.2 mm to 25.4 mm in thickness.

The expansion will add 4 million tons per year of steelmaking capacity, upgrading the IISCO complex into one of India’s most advanced and sustainable steel plants.

SAIL said the project supports its goals of technological advancement, lower carbon emissions, and alignment with India’s rising steel demand and sustainability objectives.

SAIL, which currently produces around 20.6 mln tons of crude steel annually, aims to expand its capacity to 35 mln tons per year by FY2031 as part of its long-term growth strategy. The IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) produces rebar, wire rod, angles and channels.
