Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has awarded Danieli Corus the contract to build a new greenfield mega Blast Furnace No. 6 at the IISCO Steel Plant in Burnpur. With a working volume of 4,680 m3 and an inner volume of 5,557 m3, the furnace will add 4.08 mln tons per year of steelmaking capacity to the facility.
The furnace will incorporate advanced ironmaking technologies, including dome-combustion hot blast stoves, marking the sixth reference for this design at Danieli Corus, and a dry gas-cleaning system based on the company’s Pleno V technology, originally developed for the aluminium industry and known for decades of reliable performance.
Once completed, Blast Furnace No. 6 will be the largest in the Indian subcontinent, representing a significant step forward in India’s steel capacity expansion.
SAIL, which currently produces around 20.6 mln tons of crude steel annually, aims to expand its capacity to 35 mln tons per year by FY2031 as part of its long-term growth strategy. The IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) produces rebar, wire rod, angles and channels.
