Scrap import prices unchanged amid weak steel demand

Turkey’s scrap import prices remained unchanged this week as buying activity by Turkish steel mills stayed limited amid weak finished steel demand. Scrap import prices were assessed steady at USD 370-375 per ton CFR.

Market participants said the stalemate reflects opposing positions, with scrap suppliers unwilling to lower prices due to tight supply and improving demand in their domestic markets, while Turkish mills, facing thin margins and sluggish finished steel sales, remain reluctant to accept higher offers.

According to market sources, a meaningful near-term recovery is unlikely, with mills expected to purchase scrap mainly on a hand-to-mouth basis unless the finished steel market shows a stronger rebound.

In the Turkish steel export segment, Turkish long steel offers were largely unchanged. Rebar export offers were reported at USD 555-560 per ton FOB, while wire rod offers were heard at USD 565-570 per ton FOB.
