Tata Steel plans to construct a new 1 mln tons per annum coke oven battery at its Jamshedpur plant as part of its ongoing modernization program to boost efficiency and sustainability in steelmaking.
The company has awarded the engineering, manufacturing, supply, and construction contract to Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
The new facility will replace older units, with Coke Oven Battery #7 decommissioned in January 2025 after 36 years of service and the chimneys and coal tower of Battery #6 dismantled through controlled implosion in December 2022.
The project underscores Tata Steel’s strategy to modernize production infrastructure while improving energy efficiency and environmental performance.
Tata Steel Group ranks among the world’s leading steel producers, with an annual crude steel capacity of 35 mln tons.
