7 Steel UK signs long-term rail freight deal for Cardiff plant

7 Steel UK has signed a long-term agreement with GB Railfreight to transport scrap steel to its Cardiff facility and deliver finished steel products to customers across the UK for at least 11 years.

Services are scheduled to begin in October 2026, combining rail haulage with on-site shunting operations to integrate the movement of raw materials and finished products into the steelmaker’s supply chain.

As part of the agreement, GB Railfreight will introduce two sets of purpose-built scrap wagons in 2027, alongside specially modified wagons for transporting 7 Steel UK’s outbound rebar and coiled steel.

GB Railfreight has worked with 7 Steel UK for more than 15 years under an existing contract. The expanded agreement is expected to strengthen their partnership, support more efficient logistics and reduce road congestion and carbon emissions through greater use of rail freight.

7 Steel UK, formerly Celsa Steel UK, has an annual production capacity of 1.2 mln tons of long steel products.
