ArcelorMittal Steel Service Centres Europe has completed a major modernization project at its Krakow, Poland facility, upgrading the Fimi cross-cutting line with a new hybrid straightening technology.
The project included the installation of a 30-meter stretch leveller on the CTL line, significantly improving sheet preparation for thermal cutting. The upgrade enables tighter flatness tolerances and lower internal stresses, enhancing safety, efficiency, and cost performance for customers.
The investment, valued at over PLN 29 mln (USD 8 mln), covered new straightening equipment, civil and electrical works, advanced measurement systems, and full integration with the existing line.
Following the upgrade, the Krakow facility can supply around 150,000 tons per year of high-performance sheets to sectors such as railways, automotive, and construction machinery. Independent certification by TUV confirmed process stability and repeatability. Testing showed that 92% of samples achieved the Laser Premium class, the highest standard, ensuring exceptional flatness and dimensional stability required for complex applications in automotive, rail, and machinery. All samples also met Laser Classic requirements, which ensure good flatness and low internal stress suitable for general laser-cutting applications.
