Chinese steel producer Maanshan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. (Masteel) has awarded Primetals Technologies a contract to engineer, supply and commission a new bow-type, two-strand continuous slab caster to support high-quality steel production.
The CC No.4 slab caster, with an annual capacity of 2.37 mln tons, will be installed at Masteel’s facility in Maanshan City, Anhui province. Primetals’ scope of supply includes equipment, engineering, Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems, as well as supervision during commissioning, which is scheduled for the second half of 2026.
The caster will produce slabs with thicknesses of 230 mm and 250 mm and widths ranging from 950 mm to 1,600 mm. It will support a wide range of steel grades, including ultra-low to high-carbon, low-alloy and high-strength steels for hot- and cold-rolling, pipe applications and weather-resistant products.
To meet stringent quality requirements, the caster will feature advanced automation and quality-control technologies. These include the Smart Mold cassette-type mold equipped with the DynaWidth online mold-width adjustment system, allowing fast and flexible slab-width changes and early stabilization of casting conditions.
Additional quality-enhancing systems such as DynaPhase, Dynacs 3D and DynaGap Soft Reduction 3D will optimize secondary cooling and soft reduction by calculating key thermodynamic parameters, including strand temperature, density and thermal conductivity.
The two-strand bow-type caster will have a 10-meter radius and a metallurgical length of approximately 40 meters. Operational safety and efficiency will be supported by Mold Expert breakout detection and the LevCon mold-level control system, which features automated start-up and dynamic bulging compensation.
Masteel is a subsidiary of China Baowu Steel Group, a Fortune Global 500 company, producing a broad range of flat and long steel products for industrial and commercial applications.
