British Steel secures major billet export order for Nigeria

British Steel has secured a GBP 70 mln (USD 93.6 mln) export contract to supply 120,000 tons of billet for port redevelopment projects in Nigeria, marking one of the largest orders in the company’s history.

The agreement, signed with Hitech Construction Africa Ltd, covers supply for the modernization of the Tin Can Island and Lagos Apapa port complexes. It is also the company’s largest order, supported by UK Export Finance.

To meet the contract requirements, British Steel will increase production at its Scunthorpe plant. Deliveries of 140 mm rebar-grade billet are scheduled to begin in spring and continue over a three-year period.

The project is part of a broader initiative to upgrade Nigeria’s port infrastructure, aimed at improving efficiency and expanding trade capacity.

The deal follows another major export order secured by the company in February for a high-speed railway project in Turkey, highlighting strengthening export demand for UK-produced steel.
