Hyundai Steel has issued the final acceptance certificate to SMS group for the multi-phase upgrade of continuous galvanizing line #1 (CVGL#1) at its Dangjin plant in South Korea, marking the completion of a project aimed at improving efficiency, product quality and long-term reliability.
The upgrade was carried out in two phases to ensure uninterrupted production. The first phase focused on downstream equipment, including the installation of a strip washer, dryer and upgraded bridle roll systems, along with new motors and drives. Automation was enhanced through SMS’s X-Pact Line Drive Control system, enabling more precise tension and elongation control and supporting higher processing speeds.
The second phase involved modernization of the skin pass mill, including a full upgrade of the technological control system and integration of the X-Pact Embedded controller. New hydraulic systems, including advanced servo valves and hydraulic gap control, were also installed to improve strip thickness and flatness accuracy.
The combined upgrades have enhanced process stability, reduced maintenance requirements and improved overall line performance.
Hyundai Steel, established in 1953 as Korea’s first steelmaker, has grown into a major global steel producer, specializing in materials for the automotive, construction and shipbuilding sectors. Its consolidated crude steelmaking capacity stands at 24 mln tons per year.
