Severstal boosts CherMK casting capacity with foundry upgrade

Severstal has completed a major upgrade of the shaped casting section at its SSM-Tyazhmash machine-building center at the Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works (CherMK), increasing casting output by 40pct annually. The expanded capacity will support key production units and resource assets with components and assemblies.

The project, launched in 2023, included installation of a second 7-ton electric arc furnace, a combined gas-cleaning system, a heat-treatment furnace with quench bath, a shot-blasting unit, and a vacuum film forming line. Compressor and electrical systems were also modernized, alongside the introduction of an automated process control system, with most equipment supplied domestically.

Severstal said the upgrade will improve efficiency and competitiveness, reduce reliance on external components, and lower environmental impact. The new gas-cleaning system cuts emissions to modern standards, with filtration capacity of 300,000 m2/h.

Project design was handled by Severstal subsidiary VNIIMETMASH, with installation carried out by in-house teams and regional contractors, the company said.

Severstal is a leading vertically integrated Russian steel and mining company headquartered in Cherepovets. The group operates through two main divisions: Severstal Russian Steel, anchored by the Cherepovets Steel Mill, and Severstal Resources, which oversees its iron ore and coking coal mining assets in Russia.
