Jindal Steel advances coal gasification for low-carbon steel production

Jindal Steel has expanded the use of coal gasification technology to strengthen energy security and support lower-carbon steel production, the company said.

The company has established India’s first coal gasification-based direct reduced iron (DRI) plant using syngas for ironmaking. It has also deployed syngas in galvanizing and colour coating line furnaces, marking its first application in downstream steel processing to mitigate fuel shortages.

In addition, Jindal Steel has introduced syngas injection in its blast furnace operations, reducing reliance on imported coking coal and lowering carbon emissions per ton of steel.

The integrated use of syngas across the steelmaking value chain is aimed at improving efficiency and reducing input costs, while supporting India’s push for energy self-sufficiency. The company said supportive government policies are expected to accelerate adoption of such technologies.

Jindal Steel Ltd. is a major Indian steel, mining, and infrastructure company operating integrated plants in Angul, Raigarh, and Patratu, producing a broad range of products including sponge iron, rebars, wire rod, plates, HRC, beams, sections, and rails, including head-hardened rails.
