Production halted at MMK Metalurji plants over labor dispute

Steel production has been halted at two MMK Metalurji facilities in Turkey, located in Dilovasi and Iskenderun, following action by the Ozcelik Is union, a Turkish trade union in the metal industry.

The union said the stoppage was due to the company’s failure to comply with the terms of a recently signed collective bargaining agreement. According to the union, wage adjustments agreed under the contract were not reflected in recent salary payments.

The labour union’s Gebze Branch President Selcuk Durmus stated that production will remain suspended until the employer fulfills its obligations under the agreement, adding that the union will continue to apply pressure through industrial action.

The MMK Metalurji plant includes a steelmaking shop with a casting and rolling module, a cold rolling mill, and a steel service center with continuous hot dip galvanizing and polymer coating facilities in Iskenderun. It also has a steel service center with similar facilities in Istanbul. The plant’s design capacity stands at 2.3 mln tons.
