Posco awards contract for low-emission coke oven upgrade at Pohang

Posco E&C has awarded Thyssenkrupp Uhde a contract to design and supply a new low-emission coke oven battery at Posco’s Pohang steelworks in South Korea.

The project will replace the existing Battery #3A with a new unit incorporating Thyssenkrupp Uhde’s EnviBAT technology, aimed at reducing emissions during the coking process. The scope also includes a MonoClaus plant to replace existing units and a new tar separation facility.

The upgrade forms part of Posco’s broader coke plant modernization programme, with the original unit from the 1980s set to be decommissioned. The contract covers engineering, equipment supply, site supervision and commissioning support.

EnviBAT technology enables continuous pressure control during the coking cycle, reducing emissions and improving operational efficiency. The system is already in operation across multiple facilities globally.

Posco is one of the world’s largest steel producers, while Posco E&C is its engineering and construction subsidiary.
