Suez Steel enhances efficiency at direct reduction plant

Suez Steel has reported improved energy efficiency at its direct reduction plant (DRP) based on ENERGIRON Zero-Reformer (ZR) technology, achieving high metallization rates with direct hot charging to the meltshop.

The company said it has consistently reduced natural gas consumption to slightly below 2.2 Gcal per ton (8.73 MBTU/ton) over several months of continuous operations.

The ENERGIRON ZR process, developed by Tenova and Danieli, enables flexible gas-based reduction of iron ore pellets with high metallization and a compact plant design.

Suez Steel attributed the performance gains to ongoing operational optimization and the integration of its recently commissioned captive pellet plant, which supplies high-quality pellets with improved reducibility.

Suez Steel Company, part of the Solb Misr Group, is one of Egypt’s major integrated steel producers, with a total annual production capacity of approximately 2.2 mln tons of long steel products.
