SAIL plans to build flat steel plant near IISCO in West Bengal

Steel Authority of India (SAIL) plans to establish a modern steel plant in Burnpur, West Bengal.

The plant, near the existing IISCO Steel Plant, will have a capacity of 4.08 mln tons and is awaiting final vendor selection for execution, targeting completion by 2029. Unlike the current long product-focused facility, the new plant will produce flat products for automobiles and consumer durables.

This initiative aligns with SAIL’s goal to increase total production capacity to 35 mln tons by 2031, including capacity expansions at other locations like Durgapur, Bokaro, Rourkela, and Bhilai. Pre-feasibility reports for Durgapur and Bokaro are complete, with stage-1 board approval anticipated soon.

SAIL’s IISCO plant operates a 2.6 mln-ton crude steel facility, with 85-90pct of its output being converted into long steel products such as rebars, wire rods, and heavy structural products.
