Finished steel imports exceed exports in April

India became a net importer of finished steel in April 2026, according to provisional government data, Reuters reported.

The country imported around 0.7 mln tons of finished steel during the month, rising by 30.8pct YoY, while finished steel exports increased by 24.9pct to around 0.5 mln tons. China, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, and Russia were the major suppliers of finished steel to India during the period.

According to the data, Indian finished steel exports to the UAE and the UK increased during April, while shipments to Belgium and Italy declined.

India’s finished steel consumption reached around 13 mln tons in April, up by 8.2pct YoY, while crude steel production increased by 3.9pct to 13.8 mln tons.
