Jindal Steel reports strong operational results at Angul steel melt shop

India’s Jindal Steel has reported strong operational performance from two twin-strand slab casters supplied by Danieli at its Angul steel plant, exceeding guaranteed performance parameters during the ramp-up phase.

The two slab casters, installed at Steel Meltshop No. 2, are designed to produce up to 7.2 mln tons per year of slabs in a range of dimensions and steel grades. According to the company, the facility has demonstrated high productivity, operational reliability and consistent product quality.

During optimization, the casters achieved maximum casting speeds of 2.75 m/min for low-carbon grades, 2.0 m/min for medium-carbon grades and 1.45 m/min for peritectic steel grades, surpassing guaranteed performance levels.

The plant also achieved a maximum throughput of 10.5 tons per minute for low-carbon steel grades and completed a 47-heat sequence cast over 33 hours within 45 days of the hot test. Re-stranding time was reduced to 64 minutes, compared with the guaranteed value of 68 minutes.

In addition, the facility reached a stable production rate of up to 40 heats per day, contributing to higher productivity and improved operational efficiency.

Jindal Steel said the results were achieved through close cooperation with Danieli, focusing on process optimization, equipment reliability and product quality improvements.
