Severstal has successfully completed hot commissioning of the upgraded Slitting Line No. 10 (APR-10) at its Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works (CherMK), aiming to increase productivity, improve product quality and reduce maintenance costs.
The modernization project, which began in 2024, involved an investment of more than RUB 1 bln (USD 12.9 mln). During hot testing, the upgraded line processed more than 6,000 tons of cold rolled coils and has now entered the warranty testing phase.
According to the company, the upgraded line will increase annual output of high-value and specialty cold rolled products by 15,000 tons, supplying manufacturers of radiators, industrial shelving, household appliances, automotive components and small-diameter pipes.
As part of the project, approximately 80pct of the line’s equipment was replaced, including the rotary shears, tension station, oiler and winder. The installation of new rotary shears will enable the production of a wider range of strip widths and thicknesses, with width tolerances of up to 0.5 mm, while also allowing coils to be wound on 508 mm diameter mandrels.
Severstal is one of Russia’s largest integrated steel producers, with annual crude steel production capacity of approximately 11.8 mln tons. Its flagship Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works is one of the country’s largest flat steel producers.
