India’s finished steel consumption increased 7.2pct YoY to 41.6 mln tons during the April-June (Q1 FY2026) period, supported by continued demand from the infrastructure, construction and manufacturing sectors. During the same period, finished steel production rose 5.9pct to 41.0 mln tons, while crude steel output increased 3.0pct to 42.1 mln tons.
Despite the healthy growth in domestic demand, India remained a net importer of finished steel during the quarter. Finished steel imports surged 49.2pct YoY to 2.06 mln tons, while exports increased 31.4pct to 1.59 mln tons, reflecting continued inflows of competitively priced imported material.
In June, finished steel consumption climbed 7.2pct YoY to 14.2 mln tons, while finished steel production increased 6.0pct to 13.8 mln tons. Crude steel output rose 3.9pct to 14.1 mln tons.
During the month, finished steel imports increased 57.9pct YoY to 695,700 tons, while exports rose 39.2pct to 525,000 tons, with India continuing to remain a net importer.
