Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) has supplied around 40pct of the stainless steel used in India’s first hydrogen-powered train, supporting the country’s efforts to develop low-emission rail transport.
The company produced the premium austenitic stainless steel grade X5CrNi1810 at its Jajpur and Hisar manufacturing facilities for the project.
According to JSL, the material was selected for its corrosion resistance, high strength-to-weight ratio, crashworthiness, fire resistance and durability, making it suitable for modern railway coaches. Its lightweight properties are also expected to improve the train’s energy efficiency.
The hydrogen-powered train forms part of Indian Railways’ strategy to introduce cleaner transportation technologies and reduce carbon emissions. The use of stainless steel is expected to enhance the train’s safety, operational performance and lifecycle while supporting more sustainable rail infrastructure.
Jindal Stainless, India’s largest stainless steel producer, has an annual melt capacity of 4.2 mln tons. The company operates 16 manufacturing and processing facilities across India, Spain, and Indonesia, along with a global network spanning 12 countries. Its product portfolio includes slabs, coils, plates, sheets, precision strips, blade steel, and coin blanks.
