State-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has approved, in principle, the expansion of its flagship Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh, increasing crude steel production capacity from 6.8 mln tons per year to 10.2 mln tons per year.
The project is estimated to cost approximately INR 310 bln (USD 3.2 bln), according to India’s Ministry of Steel.
Minister of State for Steel Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa told Parliament that the expansion is expected to generate direct and indirect employment during both the construction and operational phases.
He added that the plant’s major raw material requirements will be met through SAIL’s captive mines as well as domestic and imported sources.
The Bhilai Steel Plant is one of SAIL’s largest integrated steelmaking facilities, producing rails, structural steel, plates and other long steel products.
SAIL currently produces around 20.6 mln tons of crude steel annually and is targeting an expansion to 35 mln tons per year by FY2031. The company operates five integrated steel plants and three special steel plants across India, producing a wide range of flat, long, special, and railway steel products.
