JSW Salem completes billet caster revamp with Danieli technology

JSW Salem Works, part of the JSW Steel Group, has completed the modernization of one of its billet continuous casters following the final acceptance of a revamp project carried out by Danieli.

The project involved replacing an existing three-strand billet caster with a new Danieli three-strand machine. The upgraded caster features a nominal 9-m radius and 1,300-mm strand spacing, with new moulds designed to produce 160-mm and 200-mm square billets. Danieli also supplied new oscillators with Hy Power actuators, mould and final electromagnetic stirrers, withdrawal and straightening units, roller tables, and a new discharge system.

According to Danieli, the revamped caster resumed production after commissioning and achieved its target output within one week of start-up. The upgraded equipment is designed to produce 160-mm and 200-mm square billets across a range of steel grades.

The modernization also incorporates Danieli’s electromagnetic stirring technology and upgraded mechanical equipment throughout the casting and discharge areas, aimed at improving production stability, operational reliability and product quality.

JSW Salem operates a special alloy steel facility in Tamil Nadu with a crude steel capacity of 1 mln tons per year, supplying wire rod, special alloy bars and bright bars for automotive and engineering applications.
