Jindal Steel commissions automated rebar counting systems at Sohar plants

Jindal Steel Oman has commissioned online automatic rebar counting and separation systems at its Jindal Steel Sohar and Sohar Steel rolling mills as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance automation and operational efficiency.

The equipment was supplied and commissioned by China’s LMM Group, which said both rolling mills are now operating the same machine vision-based online counting system. The technology automatically counts and separates finished rebar, improving counting accuracy, reducing manual handling and streamlining dispatch operations.

Jindal Steel Oman, part of India’s Jindal Group, is one of the GCC’s largest integrated steel producers. The group operates Jindal Steel Sohar, which has annual production capacity of 2.0 mln tons of gas-based DRI, 2.4 mln tons of crude steel through EAF and ladle furnace facilities, and 1.4 mln tons of rebar.

The company’s long steel business expanded in 2023 through the acquisition of Sohar Steel, adding 700,000 tons per year of long products capacity. More recently, it acquired Moon Iron and Steel Company (MISCO), increasing its annual rebar production capacity by a further 1.1 mln tons.
