Kobe Steel invests in advanced technology for plate finishing mill at Kakogawa plant

Primetals Technologies has successfully obtained the final acceptance certificate (FAC) for a plate finishing mill installed at Kobe Steel’s Kakogawa plant in Japan. This investment, initiated in 2021, aimed to integrate cutting-edge equipment to enhance product quality and streamline delivery times. Primetals Technologies managed the project, providing core mechanical equipment, auxiliary technologies, and overseeing on-site construction and implementation.

The plate finishing mill at Kobe Steel’s Kakogawa Works had been operational for over 50 years since its establishment in 1972. Kobe Steel selected Primetals Technologies as the supplier based on its extensive experience in similar projects across Japan and globally.

Despite challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Primetals Technologies successfully delivered and installed the mill on schedule. This achievement was facilitated by close collaboration and efficient communication between the Primetals Technologies team and Kobe Steel personnel.

Featuring modern solutions, the new finishing mill exemplifies Primetals Technologies’ commitment to designing advanced rolling mill technology. It can process plates ranging from 4.5 to 360 millimeters in thickness and 1,000 to 4,500 millimeters in width. The plate finishing mill enables Kobe Steel to improve both product quality and delivery times, enhancing its competitiveness within the steel plate industry.
