ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS) and state-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore the use of syngas from a proposed coal gasification facility at or near AMNS’ Paradip pellet plant.
The proposed project would also incorporate carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). Under the MoU, the companies will initially assess the project’s technical and commercial feasibility and implementation options, with the aim of preparing a Preliminary Feasibility Report (PFR).
The proposed coal gasification facility would convert coal into syngas, primarily comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide, for potential industrial use.
AMNS India is a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, with a crude steel capacity of around 9 mln tons per year. The company produces a diversified range of flat steel products, including value-added grades, and has a pellet capacity of 20 mln tons. It is also developing an 8.2 mln tons per annum integrated steel plant in Andhra Pradesh.
