Finnish stainless steel producer Outokumpu will inaugurate a new biocoke agglomeration plant at its Tornio production site, enabling the replacement of fossil coke with biomass-based biocoke in ferrochrome production.
The EUR 30 mln (USD 34.6 mln) investment is expected to reduce direct CO2 emissions by up to 82,000 tons per year when operating at full capacity. The plant processes biochar into biocoke for use in ferrochrome production, with production already underway for both Outokumpu’s own operations and external customers.
The investment forms part of Outokumpu’s strategy to reduce CO2 emissions across its value chain by 42pct by 2030 from the 2016 baseline and support the development of lower-carbon stainless steel.
Outokumpu’s integrated stainless steel production complex in Tornio is among the world’s most efficient stainless steel production sites, with the company targeting further reductions in the carbon footprint of its stainless steel and ferrochrome production.
