An explosion at the furnace control room of Yesilyurt Demir Celik’s steel plant in Tekkekoy, Samsun province, Turkey, injured two operators, local media reported.
The incident occurred at the company’s facility in the organized industrial zone. The blast damaged windows and doors in the control room, while emergency services and police were dispatched to the site. The two operators sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Samsun City Hospital for treatment.
CCTV footage appeared to show a worker lighting a cigarette shortly before the explosion. Turkish media reported that the lighter may have provided the ignition source, although no official investigation finding confirming the cause has been reported.
The incident follows a fatal workplace accident at the same plant on June 3, when three workers were killed in an electrical/high-voltage incident reportedly related to repair work on a water pump in a wastewater pit.
Yesilyurt Demir Celik has an annual crude steel production capacity of 1.3 mln tons and a rolling mill capacity of 1.8 mln tons. It produces rebar in sizes ranging from 8 mm to 50 mm and wire rod in diameters from 4.5 mm to 30 mm.
