JFE Steel selected for CO2 transport pipeline R&D project

Japan’s JFE Steel has been selected for a research and development project aimed at developing steel pipe materials for transporting high-pressure CO2, supporting the deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure.

The company’s research into its Mighty Seam electric-resistance-welded line pipe will be conducted under The Nippon Foundation-DeepStar Joint Research & Development Program on Offshore Oil and Natural Gas, in collaboration with major energy companies including ExxonMobil, Occidental Petroleum, Shell, BP, TotalEnergies, Woodside Energy and Petrobras.

JFE Steel will conduct material testing under simulated CO2 transportation conditions at its Steel Research Laboratory in Chiba, Japan. The research will assess how impurities in captured CO2 affect the strength and fracture resistance of steel pipes.

The findings will be used to develop evaluation methods and material requirements for CO2 transportation pipelines, with the aim of supporting the safe and reliable deployment of CCS and CCUS infrastructure.
