Indian steelmaker JSW Steel has placed an order for two pelletizing plants with a combined capacity of 16 mln tons per year at its Paradeep facility in Odisha, as the company continues to expand its iron ore processing capabilities.
Each plant will have an annual pellet production capacity of 8 mln tons. The project includes plant design and engineering, key process equipment, process automation and advisory services. The facilities will use an 816 sq m induration furnace and incorporate digital process-control systems aimed at improving production efficiency and pellet quality.
The new pelletizing capacity is expected to support JSW Steel’s broader steel capacity expansion program, with the company working with Primetals Technologies on the project.
Separately, JSW Steel has recently commissioned a new steelmaking complex at its JSW Vijayanagar Metallic Limited facility in Toranagallu, Karnataka, also with technology supplied by Primetals Technologies.
The commissioned complex comprises two 350-ton LD (BOF) converters, two 350-ton ladle furnaces and two two-strand continuous slab casters, along with dedusting and automation systems. The first converter was commissioned in December 2024 and the second in August 2025.
The two casters can produce slabs with widths of 900-1,650 mm and thicknesses of 220-260 mm, covering a range of steel grades including structural, HSLA, microalloyed and electrical steels.
JSW Steel’s consolidated crude steel capacity stands at 35.9 mln tons per year, including 1.5 mln tons in the US. The company plans to increase its domestic capacity to 50 mln tons per year and total consolidated capacity to 51.5 mln tons per year by FY2030-31.
