Algoma Steel has resumed electric arc furnace (EAF) production after an unplanned outage at its Lake Superior Power (LSP) generating facility, the company said.
The steelmaker resumed EAF production on August 29 under interim operating arrangements implemented with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), while the affected LSP turbine remains unavailable. The company is currently producing and shipping steel under the arrangements.
Algoma is pursuing several options to restore full LSP generating capacity, including repairing and returning the affected turbine to service and securing a replacement turbine. The company is working with GE and other parties to determine the fastest and most effective solution.
Algoma continues to assess the potential impact of the outage on production and shipments, while mitigation measures are being pursued to limit any disruption.
