U. S. Steel has received the final required air permit to proceed with construction of a new quench and tempering (Q&T) facility at its Fairfield Tubular Operations in Alabama.
The USD 475 mln project will add in-house capacity for heat-treated tubular products and support growing demand from major US oil and gas-producing regions, including the Permian, Eagle Ford, Haynesville and Marcellus. Initial construction began in July, with full production expected in 2029.
The Q&T facility will use a two-stage heat-treatment process to improve the strength and durability of steel pipe for energy applications.
The project is part of a broader USD 550 mln investment at Fairfield Tubular Operations, including a USD 75 mln Premium Thread Line announced in 2025. The two projects will expand pipe and tube processing capabilities and product offerings.
Once completed, the Fairfield campus will also include a new training facility, warehouse and upgraded employee facilities.
Founded in 1901, U. S. Steel operates across the U.S. and Central Europe. Nippon Steel, Japan’s largest steelmaker, completed its USD 14.9 bln acquisition of the company in June 2025.
