EUROFER meets Turkish steelmakers over CBAM impact

Senior representatives of the Turkish steel industry met EUROFER President Henrik Adam in Istanbul to discuss the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), carbon-related costs and the competitiveness of Turkish steel in the European market.

Hosted by ALMAMET International Group, the meeting brought together executives from major Turkish steel producers and industry organizations. Adam presented EUROFER’s assessment of the EU’s carbon regulatory framework and CBAM implementation, followed by discussions on the impact of carbon costs and compliance requirements on Turkish mills.

Participants also discussed emissions management, investments in lower-carbon production and the implications of changing EU climate and trade policies. Carbon intensity, environmental performance and regulatory compliance are becoming increasingly important factors for Turkish steel exports to the EU.

CBAM entered its definitive phase on January 1, 2026, covering iron and steel imports into the EU. EU importers must account for embedded emissions in covered products, while carbon costs already paid in the country of production may be deducted subject to the required evidence.

Representatives from Colakoglu Metalurji, Tosyali Holding, Izmir Demir Celik, Diler Holding, Kardemir Celik, Habas, Hascelik, Tata Steel Ticaret and Kroman Celik, as well as the Turkish Steel Producers Association, attended the meeting.
