Jinan Steel Group orders two pelletizing plants from SMS

Jinan Steel Group has placed two separate orders with SMS group for large-scale travelling grate pelletizing plants at its steelworks in Hebei province, China.

One plant, with a capacity of 2.4 mln tons per year, will be installed at Ganglu Iron and Steel in Tangshan, while the second, with a capacity of 2.7 mln tons per year, will be built at Jinan Iron and Steel Group in Wu’An.

The projects are aimed at improving pellet production efficiency and meeting environmental requirements at the existing steelmaking operations. SMS will deploy its optimized thermal cooling system in China for the first time, with the technology designed to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 pct and plant off-gas by more than 30 pct.

SMS Agglomeration will supply the core travelling grate technology and Pretium control system for both plants. The digital automation platform is designed to support process control and optimize production, energy consumption, emissions and plant availability.

SMS will target a delivery period of 11 months for the projects. Beijing Shougang International Engineering Technology (BSIET) will act as EPC contractor, extending the companies’ existing cooperation on pelletizing projects in China.

Jinan Steel Group is a large private steel enterprise based in Hebei, established in 2014 through the consolidation of several regional steel producers. Its operations cover steelmaking, mineral resources and international trade, with key products including HRC, medium and heavy plate and rebar. The group has approximately 22-23 mln tons of annual crude steel capacity, along with around 8 mln tons of coking capacity and 10 mln tons of iron concentrate powder production capacity.
