Kazakhstan’s Qarmet JSC has awarded POMINI Long Rolling Mills a contract to upgrade its rolling mill in Temirtau, Karaganda region.
The rolling mill, installed by Siemens VAI in the early 2000s, currently produces around 400,000 tons per year of merchant bars, including rebar, rounds, squares, flats, angles, channels and tees.
The upgrade will allow the mill to process 150 mm billets, compared with the existing 130 mm billets. POMINI will add two Red Ring stands to the roughing train, along with rolling guides, standby equipment and lubrication components. The larger billets are expected to improve yield and operating efficiency.
The project also includes upgrades to the medium-voltage electrical system, drives and motors, as well as automation and instrumentation. A new Level 2 automation system will be developed for the entire rolling mill.
POMINI will provide advisory services for erection and commissioning, with startup planned for the second half of 2027.
Qarmet, formerly ArcelorMittal Temirtau, operates Kazakhstan’s largest integrated steelworks at Temirtau. The company was acquired by Allur co-owner Andrey Lavrentyev in 2023 and has since launched an investment programme aimed at modernizing production and expanding value-added steel products. The mill produced and shipped 3.8 mln tons of steel in 2025, with products reaching more than 40 countries.
